New York City summers have a way of making you fall in love with Manhattan all over again. The sun is out, rooftops are open, summer fashion is everywhere and people are actually smiling in the street again. The one thing I didn’t anticipate when I moved to New York? The unrelenting heat.
Sure, as a South Florida native, I’ve experienced my fair share of heat — but you have to remember, most of Us go from our air-conditioned house to our air-conditioned car to our air-conditioned destination. See the common denominator here? So I took my Miami girl knowledge and applied it to my NYC wardrobe, which helped me curate a closet filled with summer staples I can wear in the 212 and the 305. I pieced together capsule wardrobe pieces from Gap, wedding-worthy dresses from Abercrombie & Fitch and casual everyday styles from Athleta, all starting at $15.
13 Editor-Loved Fashion Finds for MIA and NYC
1. My Favorite: Honestly, it doesn’t matter what time of year it is — I’m always rocking a plain white tee. This Gap crewneck lives in my closet due to its relaxed yet slim fit, high neckline and simple design that makes it totally versatile.
2. Sporty-Chic: Whether I’m running errands in Manhattan, grabbing brunch on Miracle Mile or traveling from one city to the next, I’m usually rocking Adidas Grand Court sneakers. They’re so comfortable for all-day wear, and go with everything from polished trousers to flowy dresses.
3. Everyday Essential: I’ve lived in New York for over six years, and I have to say this winter felt like the longest, which created a ripple effect into other seasons. It’s why I never put away my Levi’s denim jacket. It acts as the perfect light layer when temps get ‘cold,’ a.k.a. anything below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Hey, I’m from Miami after all!
4. LBD Upgrade: You may think this little black dress is your average summer style, however, it’s made with moisture-wicking materials that thwart sweat while hugging your body in the best way. And because the dress has built-in shorts, I feel much more secure and covered, especially while walking up subway stairs.
5. Quite the Charmer: I’m kind of obsessed with this A&F Emerson dress, which has a modern neckline and feminine puff sleeves to give me the best of both worlds. I have this exact dress in another color (see the feature image) and have worn it for summer rooftops and family gatherings. I’m also very into this other cap-sleeve version!
6. Laid-Back Luxe: This basque-waist dress is a new addition to my closet, and I’ve already worn it internationally! The flattering design, lightweight feel and scoop-neck cut make it a summer staple. Psst, this Abercrombie find also shows off the girls nicely.
7. Low-Key Genius: Shorts that are too short tend to ride up, or worse, cause thigh chafing. I never have that problem when I slip on these Madewell vintage-looking shorts that have a mid-length inseam for a relaxed yet structured fit.
8. No Brainer: It seems like everyone has a lululemon belt bag, but I would argue that this unique one is better than the classic style. It has a flap closure that securely holds my things and gives me extra space for my phone, keys, sunnies, lip balm and even my boarding pass (for when I travel between cities).
9. Pop of Color: Butter yellow isn’t going anywhere this summer, and I love the way it looks on this button-down vest. It gives off sunny vibes, even if I’m sporting the top in New York City.
10. Denim on Denim: Sometimes denim clothing feels a little too heavy for summer, which is where this cotton dress from Old Navy comes in. It gives off a casually cool denim vibe without the weight. And I just love the elastic neckline and bow-tie detail.
11. Rich Mom: Banana Republic is one of my go-tos for elevated summer clothing, and these linen-blend trousers are a great example of why. They’re breathable, polished and effortlessly chic. You’ll look just like the rich moms living on Star Island, guaranteed.
12. Luxe Loungewear: While not totally loungewear, this button-up shirt is so soft and airy, it might as well be. The Athleta find is made from 100% linen, giving it that resortwear look, even if you’re walking to your local bodega or grabbing a Pub Sub.
13. Summer Staple: I practically live in this linen-blend muscle tank, which has a semi-cropped hem that goes well with denim shorts, maxi skirts and leggings. And because it’s so breathable, I never feel overly hot when wearing it.
