Though Argentina already punched their ticket to the 2026 World Cup, there’s still a lot on the line in tonight’s home qualifier match against Venezuela, especially for the visiting Venezuelan side.
The CONMEBOL qualifying round wraps up next week, and Venezuela needs at least one win between tonight’s match and their final one against Colombia next week to finish 7th and clinch a spot in the World Cup.
It’s also a notable match because it may be the last time Lionel Messi suits up for the Argentine national team on Argentinian soil. Messi has not yet publicly committed to playing in next year’s World Cup, but noted that he and his family are treating today’s game like a very special occasion.
“It’s a very special game, which is why my family will be there with me – my wife, my children, my parents, my siblings, and everyone else that can, including my wife’s whole family,” he said in a postgame interview after an Inter Miami match last week. “And that’s how we’re going to experience it.”
