Hilary Duff had a memorable outfit on when she gave birth to her third child.
When asked to complete the sentence, “‘I’ll never forget what I was wearing when,” during an interview with The Sunday Times published on Saturday, April 11, Duff, 38, replied, “I gave birth to my third child.”
“I was in a spandex turtleneck that I couldn’t get out of because I went into labour so fast,” she explained. “My waters broke so I had no pants on, just a spandex turtleneck. I delivered my baby at home looking like Elizabeth Holmes.”
Duff welcomed her third child, daughter Mae, in 2021 with husband Matthew Koma. She’s also mom to son Luca, 14, whom she shares with ex Mike Comrie. Duff and Koma have also welcomed daughters Banks and Townes in 2018 and 2024, respectively.
Ahead of giving birth to Mae at home, Duff had a candid conversation with son Luca about what to expect.
“I’m really big on being open and honest with him about how strong women are and what childbirth looks like,” she explained in a “Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy Podcast” episode in 2021. “He knows all about periods, and it’s important to me to normalize that conversation with him for all the women that are gonna be in his life.”
Duff has since given glimpses of her parenthood journey, exclusively telling Us Weekly in 2025 that her day to day life is “pretty chaotic.”
“I’m an overworked mom. You know what I mean? I’m tired. I get into [bed] at night and I stare at the wall, like, ‘What’s happened to me? What was that like?’ But it’s everything that I love, and I wanted it,” she said. “All of the moments that seem really hard are fleeting and they go by fast, and then you have the next thing in front of you. There’s so much joy layered in with all of the chaos. So it’s really fun.”
Duff also gave a sweet shout-out to her husband for being by her side through the ups and downs.
“Oh, [he’s] the best. Are you kidding?” Duff said. “My friends in town right now from Toronto, and I haven’t seen her for a year, and we wanted to get a workout in. So I was like, ‘We’re gonna do a 7 a.m. workout. You got the kids?’ And he’s like, ‘I’m on it. I got the kids.’ He packed lunches and made breakfast and got everybody dressed and drove them to school. Like, he’s in it.”
She continued, “He’s so hands-on, and then he’s also my best friend. We get in bed and just download information to each other at night, and it’s for fun. We’re really in the thick of it right now.”
