On another miserable Sunday for the Jets, frustration appeared to boil over on their sideline.
During the fourth quarter of what would become a 28-25 loss to the previously winless Dolphins at MetLife Stadium, Garrett Wilson — again a strange nonfactor, with just two catches on three targets — appeared to yell at Geno Smith. Wilson unleashed for a few seconds, and the quarterback appeared to listen and did not respond before Wilson walked away.
If Wilson’s goal were to force his way into being a larger part on the offense and perhaps guiding the Jets away from an inexcusable loss, the anger did not work for a team that fell to 2-5.
Wilson — who last week caught just four passes for 44 yards during a loss in Foxborough — somehow was not officially targeted once in the entire first half against Miami. He did make one catch that was erased by a penalty, and thus did not record his first catch until the third quarter. He finished with 26 yards receiving.
The Jets’ offense was not their primary issue — that would have been a defense that could not get off the field and gave up 156 rushing yards against a poor offense — but the Jets’ offense did not steal the game, either.
They were down, 21-14, in the fourth quarter before a 12-play, 68-yard drive that brought them to the Miami 1-yard line.
But two yard-losing runs and a third-down sack of Smith held the Jets to a field goal with 8:57 remaining, and the Jets never got over the hump.
