Details of Anthony Smith’s July 27 arrest, in which the UFC legend was booked on three felony charges in an incident involving his wife, have been revealed.
The incident began in Gretna, Neb., on July 26, where the 38-year-old allegedly threatened wife Mikhala Renee Newman in an altercation when she did not want to go home with him from a bar, per court documents.
“He is further accused of grabbing and pushing her inside the vehicle,” according to a Sarpy County statement. “At one point, during the drive, she was able to exit the vehicle. The defendant allegedly continued making threats, demanding that she get back inside the vehicle.
“After arriving home, she again exited the vehicle. Investigators allege that the defendant attempted multiple times to use the vehicle to strike her. The defendant’s wife was able to get out of the way and avoid any physical harm.”
Purported witnesses claim they heard heard gunshots heard coming from his house, and that Smith threatened to kill himself if law enforcement entered the premises.
Neither Smith nor Newman addressed the incident publicly.
Smith, released on $500,000 bond, could face up to 26 years behind bars for the incident.
Attempted first-degree domestic assault is a class II felony, terroristic threats is a class III-A felony, while first-degree false imprisonment is a class III-A felony.
Formerly of ESPN, Smith has worked as a studio analyst after his 26-fight UFC career came to a close.
He is currently employed by Paramount as the UFC’s rights deal moved forward with a new host.
Another UFC stalwart, Dustin Poirier, was arrested under the influence in an airport on June 22, where he threatened to fight a security guard, who quickly brought out a taser.
