The Eagles aren’t standing pat after their Super Bowl 2025 victory.
Philadelphia is releasing veteran cornerback Darius Slay, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday, in the reigning champs’ first significant move of the offseason.
The six-time Pro Bowl defensive back had a year left on his contract.
The move will be designated as a post-June 1 release, per Schefter, thus saving the Eagles $4.3 million in cap space.
Following his first career Super Bowl win, the 34-year-old Slay had previously announced that he did not plan to retire.
“I got one year left in that tank,” Slay said. “I ain’t trying to play too much more. Unless a miracle happens and I’m just feeling like I’m 21 again, I just want to do 13 years and call it a day.”
With his “one year left in that tank,” Slay had liked the idea of spending it with the Eagles.
“I would love for [my last year] to be a Philadelphia Eagle,” Slay said. “But if it ain’t, it’s cool. But if it is, I’m super blessed.”
Slay’s wife, Jennifer, posted to X reacting sadly to the news, “Real tears.“
With a return to the Eagles now presumably off the table, Slay could pivot to a Detroit homecoming with the Lions.
“I love Detroit, I got nothing but love for Detroit, that’s my second home, I do a lot for the city still to this day,” Slay told Amon Ra and Equanimeous St. Brown on the St. Brown podcast earlier this month.
“For sure the two spots I would love to always be at is Philly or Detroit.”
The Lions will be among the top challengers trying to dethrone the Eagles next season.
Detroit went 15-2 before losing 45-31 to the Commanders in the Divisional Round, in part due to a defense that was decimated by injuries.
Despite being near the end of his playing career, Slay still had a solid season in Philadelphia and should provide some meaningful impact to any team if one more year is in his future.
