Seeing Draymond Green in a non-Golden State Warriors NBA jersey would feel wrong to basketball fans.

But it’s a reality Green and the basketball world might have to reckon with. The 36-year-old, four-time NBA champion will be an unrestricted free agent next offseason after signing a one-year deal over the summer.

The Warriors signed Steph Curry to a two-year deal this past offseason, proving their intention of ensuring Curry retires with them.

But Green and Curry aren’t in the same boat. Green knows this, and explained as much during a recent interview with CNBC.

“I would love to retire a Golden State Warrior. However, I’m also not Steph Curry, right? So I don’t have every luxury that Steph Curry has, and that’s okay. It’s such a rare thing to be on one team your entire career. And if I can accomplish that feat, I would love to,” Green said.

“I would love to play basketball next year… if that’s not here, I’m not going to retire. If I don’t [retire with the Warriors], great. But I’m extremely grateful for the journey that I’ve been on here. I don’t know how many years I have left in the NBA, let alone at this place. For me, it’s all about enjoying what’s in front of us.”

Green is guaranteed one more season in Golden State. Perhaps his performance this season will determine whether he ends his career in the same place he started it.
