Doug Gottlieb is stepping away from the mic to focus on his Green Bay basketball team.
The Phoenix head coach said he would soon stop doing his national sports talk radio show to prioritize his basketball duties.
“As of now, we’re going to take a break from it,” Gottlieb said after Green Bay’s win over UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday. “I’ve got to have a life. I’ve got to be there for these kids. I’ve got to really dig in because we’re building something cool here.”
Gottlieb said that the decision was “a hard one on one level for me, but a smart one.”
The longtime radio personality had hosted a daily show on Fox Sports Radio since 2017.
“I’ve been doing this for a long time. But these kids [are] owed a fully dedicated coach,” Gottlieb told local reporters after the game. “I know I’m fully dedicated. But you only get one shot at this thing.”
While his live radio days will soon be over — for now — Gottlieb will continue producing podcasts.
“It will still be the same stuff, but I’ll do it off office hours and at home,” Gottlieb said of his podcast.
Gottlieb has worked double duty since being surprisingly hired by Green Bay in May 2024.
During his first season at the helm, the Phoenix went 4-28 in a debacle of a season.
So far this year, Gottlieb’s team is looking much improved, getting out to a 6-7 start while winning five of its last seven games.
“This is a special place. I want to be the coach that raises it from the ashes, and I’m fully dedicated to Green Bay basketball,” Gottlieb said. “I was always fully dedicated. It doesn’t really change much, but that’s what is going to happen.”
