There was not going to be a player-by-player listing of who made it and who did not.
The time for that was not immediately after Friday night’s 23-6 preseason-ending victory over the Jets at MetLife Stadium.
No, head coach John Harbaugh was not going to divulge his thoughts on the roster maneuverings that will take place before the Giants get down Sunday to the 53-player limit.
He did, however, have one announcement to make: Rookie Dominic Zvada will be the kicker to start the season.
“He’ll win the job, he’ll be the kicker,’’ Harbaugh said.
This was nearly a foregone conclusion after the 22-year-old from the University of Michigan nailed field goal after field goal this summer.
He was given the full load in this game, and he responded by going 3-for-3 on field goals, hitting from 23, 53 and 46 yards.
“That was kind of the last step to prove he could do a whole game,’’ Harbaugh said.
It was a strong competition between Zvada and Ben Sauls, who went 8-for-8 on field goals late last season for the Giants.
The left-footed Sauls also impressed Harbaugh, but Zvada outkicked him.
“I would say Ben also won a job, he should be kicking in the National Football League based on the fact if we didn’t have Dominic, Ben would have been the guy,’’ Harbaugh said. “I thought he had a great camp as well.’’
Yes, that was quarterbacks coach Brian Callahan calling the plays on offense, instead of offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. No, a change is not in the works.
“Just an opportunity to change it up a little bit,’’ Harbaugh said. “I guess we could say ‘You never know?’ You never know if something happens and Nags can’t make it to the game, caught in North Jersey traffic or something like that, maybe Cally can do it. Just something different.’’
Several teams do this in preseason games.
Last week, Donald D’Alesio, the defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach, called some of the plays on defense in the preseason victory over the Dolphins.
The Giants were strategic in which starters they put on the field.
On offense, three starting interior linemen — rookie right guard Sisi Mauigoa, center John Michael Schmitz Jr. and left guard Jon Runyan — started together.
Mauigoa leveled his older brother, Jets LB Kiko Mauigoa, on Tyrone Tracy Jr.’s 6-yard touchdown run.
