The Cowboys added some quarterback insurance Thursday.
Dallas is acquiring second-year quarterback Joe Milton III from the Patriots, according to multiple reports.
Dallas sent a fifth- and seventh-round pick to New England in exchange, NFL.com reported.
It comes following the departure of Dak Prescott’s longtime backup, Cooper Rush, to the Ravens earlier in the offseason.
Thursday news comes on the heels of recent reports that New England had received “multiple trade inquiries” about Milton, a sixth-round pick out of Tennessee in last year’s NFL draft.
Milton, who saw regular-season action in January when he went 22-for-29 for 241 yards and a touchdown in the Patriots’ season finale, was apparently open to a move, with a source telling Mass Live he “would prefer to be on a roster that best gives him a chance to compete for the starting job.”
He was behind Drake Maye and Jacoby Brissett on the Patriots’ depth chart last season.
The Cowboys, coming off a forgettable and injury-plagued 7-10 campaign, had been looking to add depth behind Prescott with the exit of Rush, who had been on his second stint with the team.
Third-string quarterback Trey Lance is currently a free agent and has drawn interest from the Canadian Football League.
