Baker Mayfield’s contract saga is over just in time, and the quarterback will be sticking around Tampa Bay for a few more years.
Mayfield and the Buccaneers agreed on a three-year contract extension worth $165 million on Tuesday, according to multiple reports, with the team set to begin the regular season Sunday.
The former No. 1 overall pick of the Browns will not hit free agency. It is the largest contract in team history and he is now signed through 2029.
Buccaneers owner Joel Glazer said in a statement after the team made the deal official that Mayfield has established himself as the “unquestioned leader of our franchise” during his time there and said the contract reflects the organization’s belief in him.
“His competitive spirit, resilience and commitment to winning embody everything we want in our players,” Glazer said. “Baker and his wife, Emily, have made a meaningful impact in the Tampa Bay community and we are thrilled their family will continue to call Tampa Bay home for years to come.”
Mayfield’s future in Tampa Bay was a major discussion during training camp. The two sides broke off talks as camp opened, but reaching a deal before the season was put back on the table as Week 1 loomed. It is the third contract executed between the two sides.
Mayfield, 31, has spent the past three seasons with the Buccaneers, posting a 27-24 record with two playoff appearances and a postseason win. He posted back-to-back 4,000-yard seasons, which included 41 touchdowns in 2024. Mayfield threw for 3,693 yards, 26 TDs and 11 interceptions last season as Tampa finished 8-9.
“Baker is the ultimate competitor, and the guys in our locker room feed off the energy, confidence and toughness he brings every day,” coach Todd Bowles said. “He prepares the right way, holds himself accountable and is an unquestioned leader for our team. His belief in himself and this team never wavers, and he sets the tone for us every day.”
