Las Vegas was built for Chiefs spectacle. Now Raiders are, too

News RoomBy News RoomOctober 4, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

This is what it was supposed to look like.

The gleaming stadium. The Las Vegas Strip shimmering just beyond it. The stars on the field and the celebrities who figure to turn up to watch them. Two unbeaten teams playing a game that commands attention in a city built to capture it.

And, because this particular production needed a villain, here come the hated Chiefs.

More From Vincent Bonsignore

Welcome to the kind of Sunday that Mark Davis envisioned when he brought the Raiders to Las Vegas.

Welcome, potentially, to the biggest Raiders game Allegiant Stadium has hosted.

Yes, the January 2022 overtime thriller against the Chargers delivered a playoff berth. That game carried immediate, season-defining consequences that an October afternoon cannot match.

But in terms of everything converging — the setting, the opponent, the star power and the possibility that the Raiders are finally building something worthy of their surroundings — Sunday offers a stage unlike almost anything this franchise has experienced since moving here.

The Raiders are 3-0. So are the Chiefs. First place in the AFC West is available to the winner.

For once, the most compelling attraction in the building might be the possibilities surrounding the team that actually calls it home.

That has been the missing piece.

Davis delivered the stadium. He delivered a permanent home in one of the world’s most recognizable destinations. He helped transform the Raiders’ business standing and surrounded himself with partners whose resources, experience and connections expanded what the organization could become.

Egon Durban. Michael Meldman. Tom Wagner. Tom Brady.

The ownership group grew. The operation evolved. Sandra Douglass Morgan brought leadership and deep Nevada roots to the presidency.

The football needed to catch up.

Three victories do not mean it has arrived. But for the first time in a while, the people building the roster, the people coaching it and the players executing the plan appear to be moving with a shared understanding of where they are going.

Sunday gives that progress its biggest examination.

Brady’s importance to this goes beyond the famous face in the ownership suite. His presence brings the perspective of someone who spent a career understanding what separates talented teams from teams that consistently win.

General manager John Spytek supplies the personnel judgment and the patience to build toward that standard.

Their relationship matters because the Raiders have too often operated with competing timelines and conflicting ideas about how to reach the same destination.

The brief Pete Carroll era exposed that problem again. An urgent push to win immediately collided with a roster that needed substantial construction.

The pivot to Klint Kubiak was an opportunity to get the pieces working together.

A young offensive coach with a defined system. A general manager acquiring players who fit it. An organization investing in a quarterback of the future without requiring him to rescue the present.

Fernando Mendoza represents the long-term vision.

Kirk Cousins is making sure the Raiders have something to enjoy while that vision develops.

His arrival was rooted in familiarity with Kubiak’s offense, experience and the belief that he could give the Raiders competent quarterback play while Mendoza learned.

Through three games, Cousins has supplied considerably more than a waiting room.

He has given the offense direction. He has given teammates reassurance when games turn difficult. And he has given Kubiak a quarterback capable of turning the coach’s ideas into meaningful production.

The surrounding talent makes those ideas more interesting.

Brock Bowers returned against New Orleans and immediately reminded everyone that the Raiders employ one of the sport’s most difficult players to defend. Ashton Jeanty remains a central piece of the offensive plan. Tre Tucker supplies speed that changes how opponents must account for the entire field.

Spytek’s investment in center Tyler Linderbaum reflected an understanding that the exciting parts require a dependable foundation.

There is a purpose to how the roster fits together.

The same applies on defense, where Maxx Crosby finally has more people helping him change games.

Nakobe Dean and Quay Walker brought experience and athleticism to the middle. Kwity Paye added another presence up front. Malcolm Koonce supplied pivotal pressure in New Orleans. Young defensive backs Zeke Masses and Treydan Stukes have already contributed interceptions.

Under defensive coordinator Rob Leonard, the Raiders have taken the ball away nine times in three games.

They have allowed zero fourth-quarter points.

Those numbers help explain the record. The response to adversity helps explain why this feels different.

Down 11 against the Saints, the Raiders kept playing. Their defense forced turnovers on New Orleans’ final four possessions. Their offense turned opportunity into a comeback.

A week earlier, they went into the Chargers’ building and finished that game, too.

Now they come home with something Las Vegas has been waiting to embrace.

A team giving people reasons to believe.

And an opponent perfectly suited to test every one of them.

The Chiefs bring Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid and Travis Kelce. They bring the familiarity that fuels contempt and the accomplishments that make beating them mean something.

They also bring a reminder that promising beginnings must eventually withstand opponents who know exactly how to expose unfinished work.

The Raiders’ running game needs to improve. The coverage needs tightening. The mistakes they have survived could become decisive against Kansas City.

But that is what makes Sunday compelling.

The Raiders have earned a game that asks bigger questions.

Davis has spent years assembling the surroundings for an occasion like this. His partners have helped strengthen the organization behind it. Brady, Spytek and Kubiak are trying to build a football operation capable of making these afternoons routine.

Now comes a chance to show how much of that vision is becoming real.

The stadium is ready.

The city knows how to put on a show.

And here come the hated Chiefs.

This time, the Raiders have a chance to be the reason everyone is watching.
