The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is reviewing Bill Simmons’ recent confession to using his daughter’s boyfriend to proxy bet on his FanDuel account.
“The Commission is aware of the comments made on the Bill Simmons Podcast and staff are currently reviewing the matter,” MGC spokesman Thomas Mills told Front Office Sports.
While discussing AFC win total bets on his eponymous podcast Monday, Simmons, the founder of The Ringer and a former ESPN columnist, reluctantly shared that he asked his daughter’s boyfriend, Hank, to sign into his FanDuel account in Massachusetts — a legal sports betting state — while he was in California, where it is illegal.
FanDuel sent an authentication code to his phone, he said, which he then gave to Hank so he could access the account and place the wagers in Massachusetts.
“He’s putting in bets for me, and honestly, it was the closest I’ve ever felt to Hank,” Simmons said. “It’s a real bonding moment for us.”
It apparently wasn’t a one-time arrangement, either.
“A week later, [I] called him up, ran it back,” Simmons said. “We did some more.”
FanDuel, The Ringer’s exclusive sports betting partner, told The Post it took action after learning of Simmons’ comments.
“We became aware of the issue and handled it consistent with our Terms and Conditions and Massachusetts Gaming Commission regulations, including reporting the matter to the MGC, voiding the bets, and actioning the account,” FanDuel said in a statement to The Post.
In Massachusetts, regulations require sportsbooks to prevent customers from placing wagers as agents or proxies for others. Anyone wagering on another person’s behalf can also be classified as a “prohibited person” under state gaming rules.
FanDuel’s terms state that accounts are for personal use and prohibit customers from wagering on behalf of another person or allowing someone else to access their account.
The sportsbook warns that proxy betting can result in a permanent account suspension and the forfeiture of winnings.
The Ringer did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Post.
