Tom Selleck Returns to TV With 1st Acting Role Since Shocking ‘Blue Bloods’ Cancellation

News RoomBy News RoomAugust 25, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

Tom Selleck is marking his acting return two years after Blue Bloods‘ shocking — and controversial — cancellation.

News broke on Monday, August 24, that Selleck, 81, will guest star in a new Apple TV comedy starring Elizabeth Banks and Ted Danson, which has yet to be named. The role will reunite Selleck and Danson, 78, who previously shared the screen in Three Men and a Baby.

Details about Selleck’s character are being kept under wraps, according to Deadline. The series follows a woman named Heidi (Banks), who is “fresh off a messy divorce and sets out to secure a lively second act for herself and her kids.”

The series description hints at some unexpected twists, teasing, “But when she stumbles into coordinating her father’s [Danson] retirement community sexcapades, Heidi is forced into an unlikely alliance with his girlfriend’s perpetually single son.”

In addition to Banks, 52, Danson and Selleck, the comedy features Rob Delaney, Katey Sagal, Jared Goldstein and Spencer Moss. Hamish Linklater, Michelle Buteau and Simu Liu will appear in recurring roles.

The unnamed project is Selleck’s first acting role since Blue Bloods ended on CBS in 2024.

Blue Bloods found a strong fan base when it premiered in 2010. After a 14-season run, viewers were not ready to say goodbye to New York Police Commissioner Frank Reagan (Selleck) and his children: Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), Erin (Bridget Moynahan) and Jamie (Will Estes).

CBS seemingly had different plans as speculation grew that Blue Bloods could end despite the cast and producers agreeing to take a 25 percent pay cut.

“Blue Bloods was a labor of love, I think, for everybody,” Selleck said about the police procedural on a July episode of Danson’s “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast.

Selleck called out the “frustrating” drama surrounding the final season.

“The real truth to that is in the last year of [Blue Bloods], at our last family dinner, everybody wanted to come back,” he noted. “We’d already taken a 25 percent cut in salary. We’d already done all sorts of things to keep the show going.”

While Blue Bloods has since expanded with the spinoff Boston Blue, Selleck has yet to make an appearance.

“It was very frustrating because out of the top 100 shows on broadcast television, Blue Bloods was No. 6 in our 15th year,” Selleck added in July. “Nobody wanted to leave. Everybody was gonna stay on. That’s hard to get.”

He continued: “It may be some kind of record to have the same cast intact for that length of time. Usually if it wasn’t a family, it would be different, but you know, you couldn’t very well replace Jamie or Danny or anybody with another actor.”

Selleck was also proud of how close the cast had become, adding, “Maybe people don’t realize, but a lot of shows become miserable to work on. You get a lot of egos and ‘I’m not coming out of my dressing room until he’s coming out’ … and it’s miserable. Blue Bloods was never that.”
