Angel Reese did her best Dennis Rodman impression Monday night.
The Dream’s star forward posted an incredible 26 rebounds in a 78-71 victory over the Sparks, shattering Chamique Holdsclaw’s single-game record of 24 that had stood since 2003.
Her incredible effort on the boards also gave her the league’s highest single-season rebounding total in the WNBA’s history. She has 458 rebounds for the Sky, topping A’ja Wilson’s previous record of 451 set in 2024.
Reese also notched 11 points, three assists and three steals in 38 minutes.
“Last time I was here, I didn’t miss any shots. Tonight, I couldn’t hit s–t, so I knew I was going be able to get them on the rebounding side,” Reese said on the postgame show on Peacock. “I just want to be consistent for my team. Offensively, defensively, whatever it takes to win.”
Reese is certainly playing some of her best basketball at the right time as the WNBA playoffs approach, with Monday’s win keeping Atlanta atop the East with a 25-13 record, ahead of the Fever by a half-game.
Atlanta has already clinched a playoff spot.
For Reese, her 26-rebound mega-effort comes on the heels of an impressive Saturday performance where she posted a career-high 31 points against the Mercury.
“That’s a talent,” Dream guard Allisha Gray said. “I’m just in awe watching her rebound.”
Her improvement on all sides of the ball is something that her coach Karl Smesko noticed.
“Angel’s been remarkable on this trip,” he said. “You can see her getting better each month.”
Reese needed just 37 games to set the league’s new rebounding mark and has six more games to pad her total.
She credits Tina Charles, the WNBA’s all-time leading rebounder over 14 seasons, for helping her find her way around the basket to clean up the glass.
“All the vets pour into me,” Reese said. “The players that have come before me were able to do so many amazing things so I can be in this very moment right now. So I’m really grateful for them, especially Tina.
“I remember last year when I was playing against her and how she was giving me little keys to playing around the basket and doing things to make yourself consistent and try to be one of the best players. And I just want to do that every single night.”
The Dream host the Fire on Aug. 28 and the Lynx on Aug. 30 before the league’s break for the FIFA women’s basketball World Cup.
