WASHINGTON — Democratic Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear again complained Sunday that Sen. Mitch McConnell and his aides are keeping the former GOP leader’s health status a secret, claiming in an interview that he’s “heard absolutely nothing” about the 84-year-old’s progress.
McConnell (R-Ky.) last cast a Senate roll call vote June 11, three days before he was hospitalized after falling at his Capitol Hill home.
The Senate is currently on a five-week recess and is due back in Washington Sept. 14.
“I’ve heard absolutely nothing back from Mitch McConnell,” Beshear told CBS News’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday.
“And while I do hope that he is getting better — I’ve known him my entire life, I wish him no harm, I actually wish him good health — his boss are the people of Kentucky, and this is why the Republican-controlled Senate feels so broken.
“They feel like they’re not accountable to anyone,” the governor added. “All he needs to do is call into this show for two minutes, or Fox News for two minutes, or do a video for two minutes.”
McConnell was discharged from the hospital Aug. 6 to continue his recovery at his DC home.
While his office has released several smiling proof-of-life photos of McConnell, skeptics have demanded more confirmation of his physical and mental fitness to complete his Senate term, which will end in January.
“My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages,” the octogenarian said in a statement released by his team last month after publicly released dispatcher audio indicated that first responders thought he may have suffered some sort of cardiac event.
“On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business,” McConnell said in another statement released by his team earlier this month.
McConnell’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Kentuckian was first elected to the Senate in 1984 and led the Republican conference from 2007 until 2025, making him the longest-serving party leader in the 236-year history of the chamber.
