LSU’s Lane Kiffin reveals surprise reason he deleted his social media

News RoomBy News RoomJuly 23, 20262 ViewsNo Comments

LSU coach Lane Kiffin is taking some time away from his social media accounts after being challenged by his son to go cold turkey.

Kiffin told reporters during SEC Media Days this week that his son Knox had bet him that he couldn’t get off social media, which the coach took as a direct challenge.

He soon realized how nice it was to log off.

Kiffin is known for his social media use and, at times, has generated headlines thanks to posts he’s made.

“Really, it just started with Knox, my son, was sitting there and he’s like, ‘You’re on social media all the time, I bet you couldn’t get off,’” he said. “If you follow me, if you tell me I can’t do something, that’s really a good way to get me to do it.”

The college football bench boss was able to get off all his social media platforms, and he seemed to be more “free” following the decision, he explained.

“So I just got off of everything,” he explained. “Got off of it. Don’t even have the apps, so it’s not even like I read it either. It wasn’t a plan for very long. I just wanted to show him I could do it. It’s been really interesting as I look back over my life and my journey, a lot of great things have come when I’ve subtracted things out of my life and I’ve eliminated them.

“Now it’s been a couple months and it’s been really refreshing.

“I’ve talked to a lot of family, friends, even players and encouraged them to take a break because what happens is, when you’re on it — this is what I found, that you don’t really realize until you’re off of it. …  It’s really taken over what we used to say we were worried about our kids doing. The adults are just as bad.”

Interestingly enough, Kiffin’s social media epiphany came around the same time he faced some scrutiny over comments to Vanity Fair about the challenges of recruiting when he coached at Ole Miss.

In the profile, he alleged that the lack of racial diversity at his previous stop made it tough to talk players into playing for the program.
