Gavin Newsom and Xavier Becerra hold mystery meeting at Mexican hotspot in San Francisco

News RoomBy News RoomJune 25, 20260 ViewsNo Comments

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra linked up at a popular Mexican restaurant in San Francisco this week.

In a post to X Wednesday morning, Newsom shared photos of the two Democrats shaking hands and sitting at a table while chopping it up in the empty eatery.

The two reportedly met at Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant, which describes itself as “family owned and operated” and specialized in Yucatan cuisine.

The restaurant is known for its margaritas, chile relleno and pollo pobil, though it’s unclear if the pair ate. A photos showed only two glasses of what appear to be water on their table.

The California Post reached out to the governor’s office and the Becerra campaign for comment.

They go to a restaurant in a city neither of them live in, clear out the customers, and not eat.
Californians are tired of manufactured photo ops with do-nothing, all-talk politicians while our state gets more expensive and worse to live in.

The two discussed healthcare, housing, the economy, small businesses, abortion, climate issues and the Trump administration, Newsom’s team told a Nexstar reporter. It was their first meeting since the June primary election.

“Focused on the work. Committed to the people,” Newsom posted on X along with the photos.

“We’ve fought side by side for California families — and together, we’re going to keep this state moving forward,” Becerra wrote on the meetup.

Becerra is the most likely successor to Newsom, who is term-limited as governor and eyeing a 2028 presidential run. Democrat Becerra, the former Health and Human Services chief under President Joe Biden, is facing off against Republican Steve Hilton in the solidly blue state.

Before the primary, Newsom was reluctant to endorse anybody in the crowded Democratic field, even awkwardly dodging a question posed by a California Post reporter seeking comment on Becerra. Once it was clear Becerra was the only Democratic candidate to advance to the general election, Newsom swiftly endorsed him.

California Republicans blasted the meetup.

“They go to a restaurant in a city neither of them live in, clear out the customers, and not eat,” the California GOP wrote on X. “Californians are tired of manufactured photo ops with do-nothing, all-talk politicians while our state gets more expensive and worse to live in.”
