Michigan appears to have its immediate plan after the Dusty May-Mavericks shocker.
The Wolverines are working toward hiring Mike Boynton Jr. as interim coach, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Monday, who added that Michigan players have been that is the expected direction.
The move would give Michigan a short-term answer after May’s sudden jump to the Mavericks left the program needing to move quickly, and, if made official, would provide the Wolverines with continuity after a jarring coaching change.
Boynton is already on Michigan’s staff, having joined May’s program in 2024 as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator.
He also brings previous head coaching experience, having led Oklahoma State from 2017-24 before joining Michigan.
Boynton went 119-109 across his seven seasons with the Cowboys.
That background makes him a logical internal option for Michigan as it tries to steady the program in the immediate aftermath of May’s departure.
The timing of May’s move makes the situation even more complicated for the Wolverines, with the coaching change coming deep into the offseason rather than at the usual point in the college basketball calendar.
May is finalizing a deal to become the Mavericks’ next head coach, a stunning jump from the college ranks to the NBA.
Now, Michigan’s expected path is turning to Boynton as the program works through the immediate fallout.
