The USA men’s national team produced another impressive World Cup performance on June 19, when they defeated Australia by a score of 2-0.
This means that the US squad has already advanced to the Round of 32 despite still having one more group stage, which is against Türkiye in Los Angeles, California, on June 25.
USA’s defense was rock solid on Friday, and the best performance of all came from goalkeeper Matt Freese. He produced two saves and directed his squad’s defensive effort, which resulted in Australia never finding the back of the net.
One of the biggest questions regarding Team USA’s roster heading into the World Cup this year was which Matt would be their starting goalkeeper: Freese, or Turner, who was the starting goalie for the USA at the 2022 World Cup.
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino ultimately went with Freese, which has looked like the right decision to this point.
Both Freese and his girlfriend, Kelsey Mentzer, aren’t very active on social media and prefer to keep their lives private. That being said, the couple has been dating since at least 2022 and are still going strong.
While Mentzer doesn’t have a public Instagram account, she was seen in an Instagram story post that Freese shared in the wake of Friday’s win against Australia.
The post showed Freese embracing Mentzer alongside what appears to be other members of Freese’s family, who seemingly made the trip to Seattle to watch him play.
Freese’s story was captioned, “❤️🤍💙🇺🇸,” and showed Freese with his arm around Mentzer, who is wearing a Team USA jersey.

It’s cool to see that Mentzer showing Freese support, which she’ll surely continue doing throughout this 2026 World Cup run.
