Braves outfielder’s bizarre throw allows Mets to score as Atlanta drops series to rivals

News RoomBy News RoomJune 15, 20260 ViewsNo Comments

Professional baseball in the United States has been around for more than 100 years and there are still some things you really don’t see every day.

Take Atlanta Braves outfielder Mike Yastrzemski for instance.

The Braves were looking to get at least one more win against the New York Mets in their National League East rivalry series. Yastrzemski fielded a slapper to left field from Mets batter A.J. Ewing. Yastrzemski tracked the ball down and tried to throw it back into the infield.

However, Yastrzemski’s throw caromed off the pole that holds the netting around the third base line together. The ball bounced off the pole, allowing another run to score. Bizarre plays have usually hurt the Mets this season, but this time New York was the beneficiary.

“Look, he’s coming, turning around and throwing the ball as quick as he can,” Braves manager Walt Weiss said, via MLB.com. “One-in-a-million shot that it hits that pole. You get tucked in that corner there and it’s a tough angle coming out of there. You throw it straight, yeah, that pole is in the way. … Just a tough angle for Yaz right there.”

Ewing finished a triple shy of the cycle as the Mets won the game, 8-1. He and Marcus Semien hit home runs on consecutive pitches in the fifth inning and Juan Soto added a two-run single in the eighth.

The Braves still hold a dominant lead in the NL East and have the best record in baseball at 46-25.

The Mets are last in the division. The team is 32-39 this season.
