Eric Swalwell scandal snowballs for Dems as massive new fallout rocks Congress

News RoomBy News RoomApril 12, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

Members of Congress are looking to force California gubernatorial candidate Eric Swalwell out of office — and it could spark an exodus of those also accused of misconduct.

Rep. Swalwell’s political career is on life support after accusations published Friday by four women accusing him of sexual misconduct, including alleged rape. The Democrat is also facing an investigation by the Manhattan district attorney.

Soon after the allegations surfaced, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) said she would force a House floor vote this coming week to remove Swalwell.

“If Democrats want to protect this type of garbage – I wouldn’t recommend it – but they’re going to be put on the board for that,” she said.

Democratic members of Congress were quick to tell Swalwell to drop out of the governor’s race, where many had called him the Democratic frontrunner. However, some such as House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries stopped short of telling him to resign from Congress — and were slammed for it.

Democrats may stomach the push to expel Swalwell, however, if other members of Congress are also expelled.

Jeffries and others are expected to counter with a move to bring up a vote on expelling Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas), who has been embroiled in a sexual scandal as well.

A staffer whom Gonzales allegedly had an affair with committed suicide.

Swalwell has repeatedly denied the accusations, promising in a Friday video that he “will fight them with everything that I have.”

Gonzales has admitted to the affair but insisted “I had absolutely nothing to do with her tragic passing.” He dropped his reelection bid in response.

A number of elected officials expressed support for the idea of holding both Swalwell and Gonzales accountable for the alleged actions.

“Congress must hold itself to the highest ethical standard, regardless of party,” wrote Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.).

The tit-for-tat expulsions could also expand to another Democrat and another Republican in Congress. Rep. Corey Mills (R-Fl.) has been linked to a report of an assault on a woman.

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fl.) has been indicted and is accused of embezzling $5 million of federal disaster money.

Both have denied wrongdoing. Luna said there would be a motion at the end of the month to expel Cherflilus-McCormick.
