Gavin Newsom shades Kamala Harris over his portrayal in her memoir

News RoomBy News RoomMarch 26, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

Gov. Gavin Newsom took a dig at Kamala Harris for twisting the truth of what happened in a supposed texting spat between the two in her memoir “107 days” — speculating there was a financial motive.

The memoir, which recounts Harris’s 2024 presidential campaign, only gave “a little shot as to the actual truth” of what happened when Harris gave Newsom a call after she found out Joe Biden dropped his presidential reelection bid, the governor said in an interview with Axios on Thursday.

In her book, Harris claimed that Newsom texted her, “Hiking. Will call back,” but he never did. Newsom recounted things differently.

“I remember texting her back, and I said, ‘Kamala, I’ve already put out a statement supporting you,’” he said, adding he was “the last person you need to talk to” as she put up a bid to replace Biden.

📚 NEW on The Axios Show: Gavin Newsom downplayed a rift with Kamala Harris, but chided her for how she portrayed him in her book:

“I think it created some color for the book. It certainly helped her book sales — not my component part, but that book has done unbelievably well.” pic.twitter.com/IgXOdnHNEt

“For whatever reason, she added that in, and it created some color for the book,” Newsom added. “It certainly helped her book sales, not my component part, but that book has done unbelievably well.”

Newsom insisted the two Democrats have a great relationship, despite it reportedly being marked by awkwardness and friction after the release of her memoir, according to the New York Times.

He said their history goes back more than 20 years as they rose the political ladder together.

He pointed to the fact he introduced her at the last Democratic National Convention and formally gave her enough votes to secure the presidential nomination.

“It was the ultimate affirmation of that relationship,” he told Axios, adding that press and pundits “want to make something of that” spat.

Still, there were hints of some tension as the two navigate politically around each other. Newsom and Harris are both regarded as potential contenders for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination.

“When she goes, she goes first. And I’ve always understood that and that’s wonderful,” Newsom said of the nature of his relationship with her.

The two may not be just competing politically but also in terms of book sales. Newsom is also promoting his own memoir, “Young Man in a Hurry.”

The governor acknowledged he hasn’t fully read Kamala’s book because he was more focused on getting his out.

The California Post reached out to Harris’s office for comment.
