Yankees Shortstop Anthony Volpe Speaks Out Amid Opening Day Roster Absence, Shares Injury Updates

News RoomBy News RoomMarch 25, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe issued an update about that shoulder injury keeping him off the field — and he sounds ready to get back to work.

Volpe was noticeably missing when the Yankees’ 2026 Opening Day roster was announced against the San Francisco Giants in March 2026, with another player stepping in as the starting shortstop. But Volpe? He’s not sweating it.

Will Anthony Volpe Be Watching the Yankees’ 2026 Season Opener?

Asked by NJ.com whether he’d watch the Yankees’ season opener in March 2026, Volpe kept things short: “Yeah.”

And when pressed about when he’d be back at batting practice? One word: “Soon.”

His later comments to the site told the full story, though. Volpe made it clear he has zero interest in looking backward.

“It doesn’t do me any good, so I’m just on to the next and I’m excited to just really put it all behind me. I feel great and amazing now. I can’t wait to get back on the field and just play, so I’m not even thinking about last season,” he said.

How Did Anthony Volpe Get Injured?

Volpe’s injury traces back to a May 2025 game when he felt a pop in his left shoulder after diving for a ball. Cortisone shots kept him on the field for a while, but the fix was temporary. He re-aggravated the shoulder in September 2025, and surgery followed in October 2025. Rehab started shortly after. Now, months into that recovery process, the 2023 MLB debutant has his eyes locked on what’s next.

Yankees Manager Aaron Boone Sees Big Progress in Anthony Volpe’s Recovery

Yankees manager Aaron Boone backed up Volpe’s optimism with a promising update of his own.

“I think the last month, and even more specifically, the last couple of weeks, have been really encouraging where Volpe’s kind of turned that next corner of the rehab process,” Boone said. “I think if you ask him now, the last couple weeks, he feels like he’s a healthy guy now.”

There’s even a concrete timeline emerging. According to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, “Anthony Volpe will likely start a rehab assignment around the second week of April, Aaron Boone said. He’ll essentially go through a full spring training at that point,” Kirschner posted on X.

Who Replaced Anthony Volpe on the Yankees’ 2026 Opening Day Roster?

Boone had nothing but praise for the man filling Volpe’s spot — José Caballero.

“Cabby’s a really good player,” Boone said of Caballero, per NJ.com. “He does a lot of things that help you win games. I feel really confident with him defensively (at shortstop) being able to hold it down, but also with a lot of the intangible different things he brings to the table offensively and on the base paths, I feel like we’re going to be in great hands.”

When Will Anthony Volpe Be Back on the Baseball Field?

With a rehab assignment potentially kicking off around the second week of April 2026, Volpe’s absence from the Bronx lineup shouldn’t stretch much longer. The shortstop, who signed with the Yankees in 2019 and made his MLB debut in 2023, has been putting in the work behind the scenes.
