Lindsey Vonn’s thrilling Olympic comeback story was brought to a quick end just for coming too close to a gate in the women’s downhill. Ilia Mahlinin had two unlucky falls that lost what was thought to be his gold medal to win. Mikaela Shiffrin has yet to make the podium and Erin Jackson failed to defend her 500-meter speedskating gold.
However, there are some all-reliable Americans that have a dominance that cannot be denied.
The U.S. women’s hockey team punched their ticket to the gold medal final with another convincing win, 5-0, over Sweden in the semifinals on Tuesday. Netminder Aerin Frankel earned her team’s fifth straight shutout and became the first goalie in Olympic women’s hockey history to record three shutouts in a single tournament. The U.S. has not sacrificed a single goal over 16 consecutive periods, a streak that stretches 11 days and five games.
