‘Who’s Line Is It Anyway?’ Star Colin Mochrie Undergoes Emergency Surgery After Suffering a Detached Retina

News RoomBy News RoomJanuary 6, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

Who’s Line Is It Anyway? alum Colin Mochrie has suffered a detached retina requiring emergency surgery.

Mochrie, 68, went into surgery on Friday, January 2, the team behind his show, HYPROV: Improv Under Hypnosis, announced via Instagram that day.

“We regret to inform you that our upcoming shows will be postponed due to a medical situation involving Colin Mochrie,” read a statement by “The Hyprov Team.”

Their message continued, “Colin has been diagnosed with a detached retina and will be undergoing emergency eye surgery today. His medical team is optimistic about his full recovery, but he needs time to rest and heal.”

The post stated that the show was “working on rescheduling” the Canadian’s postponed appearances at the OLG Stage in Niagara Falls, Ontario on January 2 and Saturday, January 3. Ticket-holders unable to attend the rescheduled performances will be eligible for a refund.

“Colin is incredibly grateful for your support and well wishes,” read the note. “He looks forward to being back on stage and sharing many more laughs with all of you in the near future.”

Mochrie’s fans left messages of support in the comments section.

“Colin is a national treasure. Hope things go well,” wrote one fan, while another remarked, “Much love and quick healing to Colin … thank you for being honest otherwise we would’ve been extra worried about his condition… ❤️”

Us Weekly has reached out to the comedian’s manager, Jeff Abraham, for comment.

Earlier Monday, Abraham released a statement to USA Today confirming that Mochrie is “resting” after his surgery. The outlet also published a statement by Mochrie thanking “everyone for their well wishes. I’m very much looking forward to seeing you all very soon.”

Mochrie is expected to resume his Asking for Trouble Tour with fellow comic Brad Sherwood on January 30 in Waukegan, Illinois, according to his website. He’ll perform that show for seven subsequent dates in the U.S. through October 15.

Mochrie was a fixture on Who’s Line Is It Anyway? since the improv series first aired on ABC, from 1998 to 2006, before being revived on the CW in 2013. He’s also starred in the Canadian sitcoms Getting Along Famously and She’s the Mayor. His other TV credits include Murdoch Mysteries, Degrassi Takes Manhattan and The Drew Carey Show.

“I’m at an age where things hurt more than they used to,” he told Vulture in 2023. “But there’s also a thing called Doctor Theater, where you’re onstage, and all of a sudden you’re a 20-year-old again. So for those two hours, it doesn’t even feel like I’m expending any kind of energy. I’m just having a lot of fun. Before and after the show: different things.”

He said at the time that he felt “very fortunate for the success of Whose Line that I’ve been able to tour all around the world and work with improvisers from all around the world.”

He noted that he and his Whose Line Is It Anyway? castmates had worked “so well together because we don’t spend enough time with each other to get on each other’s nerves.”
