Honda is recalling more than 70,000 US vehicles over a loss of brake function, which could increase the risk of a crash or injury, auto safety regulators said Wednesday.
The recall includes certain 2016-2020 Honda Acura ILX vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The automaker said contaminated brake fluid may cause a seal inside the brake master cylinder to swell and deform, triggering an internal brake fluid leak, which can impair brake function.
Honda said the faulty brakes can increase the distance required to stop, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
It estimated about 0.3% of the 70,658 recalled vehicles – or roughly 212 cars – have the defect.
Owners should bring their vehicles to a Honda dealership, where the brake master cylinder will be replaced, free of charge.
Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed by Feb. 2, 2026. Additional letters will be mailed once a remedy is available.
Honda said it has received 192 warranty claims related to the recall, though there have been no reports of a crash or injury linked to the defect.
The recall report also suggests that Honda may have been aware of the default more than five business days before filing a report with the NHTSA, which goes against federal law, the safety agency said.
