It may be Zach Wilson time in Miami.
Dolphins’ coach Mike McDaniel told reporters on Tuesday that Tua Tagovailoa’s spot as the starting quarterback is up for review ahead of their matchup with the Bengals.
“The QB play last night was not good enough,” McDaniel, who is surely feeling the hot seat after the 28-13 loss to the Steelers, told reporters. “So everything is on the table.”
Tagovailoa’s stats in Monday’s 28-15 loss to the Steelers weren’t terrible: 22/28, 250 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, with a 133.2 QBR. Much of that, however, came in garbage time.
Through three quarters, Tagovailoa had just 65 yards passing with an interception (his league-leading 15th) as the Dolphins were down 28-3.
If Tagovailoa is indeed benched, you can expect that the former Jets top prospect will get at least a look for the starter’s position.
Wilson, who never lived up to the massive expectations with Gang Green, hasn’t played much for the Dolphins this season, his first in Miami, getting just nine pass attempts (six completions) for 32 yards in mop-up duty.
It’s a major opportunity for Wilson if he is indeed given the starting role for the rest of the season.
Should Wilson show off any of the promise that led to the Jets selecting him No. 2 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, he could get a crack similar to Baker Mayfield’s turn with the Rams in 2022 that helped spur his rise to full-time starter.
The Dolphins also have rookie Quinn Ewers on the roster, currently listed as the third string QB for Miami, and the Texas alum could get a chance to make his NFL mark.
