An epic battle of the backups is going down across the pond.
On Sunday, Oct. 5, Carson Wentz’s 2-2 Minnesota Vikings and Dillon Gabriel’s 1-3 Cleveland Browns are slated to go head-to-head at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as part of the NFL’s International Series.
If you’d like to be there to witness this gritty, gridiron showdown live, last-minute tickets are available for the matchup.
At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find on seats was $179 including fees on Vivid Seats.
100-level seats start at $294 including fees.
Ahead of the overseas matchup, the Purple People Eaters are coming off a tough 24-21 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers at Dublin’s Croke Park. Wentz — who stepped in for the injured J.J. McCarthy in week three — completed 30 of 46 passes for an impressive 350 yards and connected for two touchdowns but ended up being bested by Aaron Rodgers’ club.
“At the end of the day, we lost,” Wentz said in a postgame press conference. “…that’s all I’m concerned about…got a bad taste in my mouth.”
Cleveland’s most recent contest wasn’t as close; they fell 34-10 at the hands of the dominant Detroit Lions and ended up demoting starter Joe Flacco in favor of rookie Dillon Gabriel, who will be making his first start on European soil.
“This is not about one person,” Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said. “Joe is a captain of this football team. We’re going to need his leadership going forward, as always. … [Dillon’s] handled everything well since he’s been on campus here. So just gonna have to support the young man.”
In the Browns’ final preseason game, Gabriel started against the Los Angeles Rams and led the team to a gritty 19-17 victory.
And, who knows? This just might be the game splashy backup Shedeur Sanders finally takes the field for the Browns.
