Bringing Up Bates star Erin Bates is fighting for her life following the birth of her and husband Chad Paine’s seventh child.
Paine announced via Instagram on August 27, 2025, that he and Bates had welcomed their son, Henry Blythe.
“After a long and emotional labor, our miracle arrived. Henry Blythe was born August 25th. 💙,” he wrote. “Henry is doing wonderful, but we would so appreciate your prayers for Erin as she continues to recover from some complications. We thank the Lord for carrying us through and for the gift of this precious boy.”
Paine later revealed that his wife had experienced septic shock after she suffered infections in her body.
Keep scrolling to see everything we know about Bates’ septic shock battle:
What Is Septic Shock?
Septic shock is the last and most severe stage of sepsis, which occurs “when your immune system has an extreme reaction to an infection,” according to Cleveland Clinic. “The inflammation throughout your body can cause dangerously low blood pressure.”
In the early stage of sepsis, one might experience symptoms like “fast heart rate, fever or hypothermia (low body temperature), shaking or chills, warm, clammy or sweaty skin, confusion or disorientation, hyperventilation (rapid breathing) and shortness of breath.” Sepsis can develop into severe sepsis, followed by septic shock. Symptoms of septic shock include “very low blood pressure, lightheadedness, little or no urine output, heart palpitations, cool and pale limbs and skin rash.”
Septic shock is most commonly treated with antibiotics and intravenous (IV) fluids.
A UTI and Kidney Infection Led to Erin Bates’ Septic Shock
Paine posted an update on September 1, 2025, sharing more details about the “complications” that Bates had experienced.
“We wanted to thank each and every one of you for all the prayers and support you have given on our behalf. It’s been a week since our miracle, Henry came into the world. He is doing well in the NICU and is our bundle of happiness,” he began.
Paine continued, “We had asked for prayer for recovery for Erin due to complications. Her labor was longer and more intense than previous births. She has been fighting through it and has been such a light and sweet testimony of grace to nurses, staff, and doctors alike. We are all moved by her kindness and gratefulness in the midst of pain.”
Paine explained that Bates “developed a severe UTI and kidney infection, which sent her into septic shock.”
“She is currently still in the ICU as doctors continue to treat, diagnose, and search for answers. We would covet your prayers for this beautiful girl who is such a light in a dark world. We are holding onto God’s promises,” he concluded.
Erin Bates Suffered a ‘Severe Seizure’ Amid Her Recovery
Paine shared in another update on September 4, 2025, that Bates had suffered a setback in her recovery.
“I have so many mixed emotions as I share this. Last night, Erin suffered a lengthy and severe seizure. Up to this point, Erin’s infection was getting better, but we found ourselves back in a place of heartache, uncertainty, and tears,” he wrote.
Paine added that Bates is “in the ICU” as doctors continue to run “scans and tests to determine the cause” of her illness.
“Erin is extremely weak and spent hours only half conscious. As her husband, it is one of the hardest things I’ve ever faced — to sit by her side and watch her struggle while being so helpless to ease her suffering. I love her more deeply than words can express, and I can’t even imagine life without my best friend,” he continued. “The hours have been long and heavy, and I know many hearts are aching to see her this way, along with mine. We hold on to faith that healing is coming, even in the midst of the unknown. Your prayers are felt and we are forever grateful.”
Erin Bates’ Recovery Updates
Nearly two weeks after giving birth to baby Henry, Bates appeared to be on the mend after she was hospitalized for septic shock.
“With tears in our eyes, we are praising the Lord that we are on the road to recovery,” Bates and Paine wrote via a joint Instagram post on September 6. “Your prayers have definitely touched heaven 🙏🏻.”
The couple also included a video of Bates hugging her newborn baby in a hospital bed.
“Two miracles laying in that bed!” the Bates family’s official Instagram wrote in the comments section. “So thankful to God!”
Paine told Instagram followers on September 9 that his wife was moved to a new facility amid her recovery “where a team of doctors is working together to help her improve.” He added, “We miss our babies more than words can say, and we are so grateful for each prayer, message, and act of kindness from those who have reached out during this time. Your love is carrying us. 🤍.”
Erin’s parents, Gil and Kelly Jo Bates, revealed in a September 10 social media post that their daughter’s diagnosis has “changed several times.”
“She’d recover from one thing, just to experience yet another complication,” a statement read. “It’s puzzled the doctors who’ve done a significant amount of testing, so without an exact diagnosis and with her condition changing often, it’s been harder to share [updates].”
