The best-of-seven series between the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche continues to zag when it’s supposed to zig.
The Stars were counted out after losing Game 1, but responded with back-to-back wins in overtime to take control of the series.
Then, the Avs responded with a dominant performance in Game 4, causing everyone, including me, to pat the Stars on the back and say, “Thanks for coming out.”
But Dallas has relished the underdog role in this series and pulled the upset in Game 5 to push the Avalanche to the brink of elimination.

Stars vs. Avalanche Game 6 betting preview
The Avalanche are a decided -190 favorite for Thursday’s Game 6, which is down a few ticks from where they closed Saturday night, which was the last time they played at home.
Perhaps the number widens and gets back to the -200 range where it landed when the puck dropped for Game 4, but it’s also possible that we’re seeing the market show more confidence in the Stars.
Playing without its best defenseman and leading goalscorer from the regular season, the only option in this series for Dallas is to hang around, weather the storm and then take advantage of opportunities to counterpunch.
The Stars have played that script perfectly, getting timely performances from Jake Oettinger, Wyatt Johnston, Tyler Seguin and a rotating cast of depth players.
Colorado was supposed to be the deeper team in this series, but that isn’t how the first five games have played out.
Nathan MacKinnon has five of Colorado’s 15 goals in this series, and they’re still waiting for Brock Nelson, Cale Makar, Valeri Nichushkin, Charlie Coyle, Martin Necas and Jonathan Drouin to find the back of the net.
Stars vs. Avalanche Game 6 pick
The Avalanche will need to thread the needle Thursday night.
Colorado is built to play frenetic, high-event hockey, but with its back against the wall, the Avs will have to manage the situation and the pressure. Dallas has been opportunistic, and the Avalanche will know that one mistake could send them packing.
Betting on the NHL?
With that in mind, I expect this one to be a nervy, cagey contest with scoring chances at a premium. It also helps that referees tend to put their whistles away in the business end of a best-of-seven series, limiting power-play opportunities.
Throw in a couple of in-form goaltenders and you’ve got all the boxes ticked for a play on the under.
The Play: Under 6 (+100)
