A record-high level of Americans believe the US isn’t doing enough to support Ukraine, jumping 16 percentage points from December as President Trump tries to wind down the war, a new poll shows.
Nearly half, or 46%, of Americans feel the US isn’t doing enough for its war-torn ally, while 30% believe it’s doing too much, and 23% say Washington is giving Ukraine the right amount of support, the Gallup survey found.
The poll shows that more Americans than ever want the US to do more for Ukraine since the war broke out three years ago and marks a significant jump from December, when 30% felt Washington wasn’t doing enough.
Between late 2023 and this most recent poll, Gallup had regularly found that a plurality of Americans believed the US was doing too much for Ukraine.
Trump just fully restored US military aid and intelligence-sharing again to Ukraine last week, after a brief pause while clashing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky infamously battled Trump and Vice President JD Vance in an Oval Office showdown in front of the cameras last month over whether Moscow could be trusted.
A firm 79% of Americans said they are “very” or “somewhat” worried that Russia won’t abide by the terms of an agreement, either, according to the latest Gallup poll.
But Trump has long bemoaned the tens of billions of dollars worth of aid the US has marshalled to Ukraine since the war began and recently pushed for a mineral-rights agreement with Ukraine to recoup those taxpayer dollars.
The White House also has been pushing a cease-fire plan.
Last week, after a pressure campaign, Ukraine agreed to a 30-day cease-fire agreement championed by the Trump administration.
Trump and Russian tyrant Vladimir Putin then talked about the proposal by phone Tuesday. The Kremlin rejected the full proposed cease-fire Trump sought but agreed to stop attacking Ukrainian “energy and infrastructure” for 30 days.
That limited pause in attacks is intended to make space for negotiations on a large peace agreement between the two warring countries.
Much of the surge in Americans wanting the US to provide more help to Ukraine reflects a dramatic jump among both Democrats and Independents.
A whopping 79% of Democrats believe that the US isn’t doing enough for Ukraine, up 31 points since December, while 46% of Independents feel the same way, a 14-point increase; the Gallup survey found.
Meanwhile, Republicans believing the US hasn’t provided sufficient support had remained stagnant at around 12% since December.
Meanwhile, Americans’ support for backing Ukraine’s efforts to reclaim the vast swaths of territory that had been seized by the Russians has jumped 5 points since December, to 53%, while 45% prefer a quicker end to the war similar to what Trump is pursuing, the poll shows.
Nearly a fifth of Ukrainian territory is estimated to have been seized by the Russians since the start of the war. Russia has attempted to carve out and control four major territories out of the Donbas region.
Zelensky has been adamant about reclaiming the land that the Russians have stolen, but he’s been open to pursuing territorial restoration diplomatically in the future rather than through the battlefield.
Given the protracted fighting, 63% of Americans believe that neither Russia nor Ukraine is really winning the war, compared to 26% who believe Russia is coming out on top, while 10% say Ukraine, Gallup found.
The Gallup survey was taken from March 3 to 11, in the aftermath of the fiery Oval Office meeting with Zelensky, Trump and Vance. It sampled 2,219 American adults with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
