NewsNation anchor Dan Abrams said he will pull the plug on his primetime show early next year — a decision that could allow Chis Cuomo to move to a slot he has coveted.
Abrams cited an overcommitted schedule in announcing Thursday that he will step aside in early February from hosting “Dan Abrams Live,” which airs at 9 p.m. ET on the upstart cable news channel.
Cuomo, who precedes Abrams on NewsNation’s nightly lineup, has long been rumored to want a move to 9 p.m., reclaiming the start time of his old CNN show.
Cuomo joined NewsNation in 2022 after being ousted from CNN and signed a multi-year contract, the network announced earlier this week.
The Post reached out to Cuomo for comment.
NewsNation said it would name Abrams’ successor early next year.
Abrams said he will remain with the network but needs to scale back his schedule.
“As you may know, I also host a weekend show called ‘On Patrol Live’ that follows police in real time, I host a daily radio show on SiriusXM and appear on ABC News as its chief legal analyst,” he told viewers Thursday.
“But in my on-air roles, I devote far more of my time to this show than anything else, and as hard as it is for me to admit, it’s just not practical to do this show all week while also running, and expanding, my businesses.”
He concluded by saying: “Three years after this really unexpected opportunity, I’ve reached the point where it’s impossible to keep devoting the time needed for this show while also running and growing my other businesses.”
Abrams inked a multi-year deal with NewsNation last year, and was instrumental in forging the network’s new identity under the ownership of the local TV station giant Nexstar, which rebranded it from WGN America and turned it into a 24-hour cable news station.
The lesser-known network has gained steam since its launch four years ago with its primetime lineup expanding 92% or to an average of 115,000 total viewers, according to Nielsen.
The network has also benefited from post-election declines at left-leaning rivals CNN and MSNBC, as well. In November, NewsNation’s primetime ratings grew 25% over the previous month, reeling in 111,000 total viewers.
Meanwhile, for the same period, CNN’s total primetime viewers fell 13% to 725,000 and MSNBC’s ratings dipped 22% to just under 1.1 million.
Fox News continued to dominate with ratings growth of 16% to just under 3.2 million total viewers.
