Starring Dakota Fanning and Brittany Murphy, Uptown Girls is a movie about the more unconventional mother-daughter relationships in life. When Naive heiress Molly Gunn (Murphy) loses her inheritance, she is forced to get a job as a nanny to the precocious and uptight Lorraine “Ray” Schleine (Fanning). Despite their difference in ages and maturity levels, both girls wind up finding some of the maternal support they never got from each other.
Their initially rocky relationship gradually transforms into a nurturing bond where each provides the emotional support and guidance the other is missing, highlighting that motherly love can come from unexpected places and people.
This funny, charming film emphasizes themes of growth, acceptance and the transformative power of love, which are great themes for Mother’s Day. Through humor and poignant moments, Uptown Girls shows us that motherhood is not just defined by blood relations, but also by the care, guidance and love shared between individuals. It’s a slightly less obvious, but still worthwhile, addition to your Mother’s Day movie marathon.
