By now, it shouldn’t be surprising that Netflix has some of the best movies lined up for October 2025.
The streamer didn’t get to be No. 1 by disappointing subscribers, and there are some very strong movies to choose from.
To narrow things down, Watch With Us has selected our picks for the top three, as ranked by IMDb.
Our choices include an all-time classic and two great war movies. And yet there’s only a single Best Picture winner among them.
3. ‘The Hurt Locker’ (2008)
IMDb rank: 7.5
The Hurt Locker is the only Oscar-winner for Best Picture on this list, and yet it ranks behind the other two on IMDb. Regardless, this is the triumph of director Kathryn Bigelow‘s career, and she actually has a new film, A House of Dynamite, debuting on Netflix later this month.
Jeremy Renner stars in this movie as Sergeant First Class William James, a bomb disposal expert who does things his own way in the heart of Iraq’s deadly insurgency. James doesn’t waste any time alienating his fellow soldiers, Sergeant J. T. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Specialist Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty), and that may be a serious mistake. This is the time and place where all three of them need to have each other’s backs, or else there may not be a homecoming for any of them.
The Hurt Locker is streaming on Netflix.
2. ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ (2016)
IMDb rank: 8.1
The irony of Hacksaw Ridge is that director Mel Gibson had to deliberately downplay the World War II heroics of Desmond Doss because they were too unbelievable even for a movie. Andrew Garfield plays Dross in the film as an extremely devout man who believes that it’s his patriotic duty to sign up as an army medic after the Pearl Harbor attack.
Dross’ pacifism and refusal to bear arms make him extremely unpopular with Captain Jack Glover (Sam Worthington) and the other soldiers in his unit. That doesn’t stop Doss from putting his own life on the line to rescue his men during the bloody battle at Hacksaw Ridge. What he was able to accomplish is truly astonishing, which is why Hacksaw Ridge is so captivating to watch.
Hacksaw Ridge is streaming on Netflix.
1. ‘Taxi Driver’ (1976)
IMDb rank: 8.2
Nearly five decades after Taxi Driver‘s release, Travis Bickle remains one of Robert De Niro‘s most memorable roles. Director Martin Scorsese cast De Niro as Bickle, a severely disturbed Vietnam vet who can’t find his place in society. Even after landing a date with Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), Bickle still manages to screw up that human connection during his downward mental spiral.
Bickle also develops protective feelings towards Iris Steensma (Jodie Foster), an underage prostitute. He truly wants to help Iris, but the only way he knows how is through escalating violence that may get him killed.
