Searching for something to watch this weekend?
Hulu is the best streamer around if you want to watch all kinds of films.
Hulu’s library is filled with blockbusters, but it’s the hidden gems that Watch With Us is spotlighting.
On the weekend before Halloween, we recommend watching the underappreciated remake of The Omen, as well as the new remake of the classic thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.
Finally, if you’re craving laughs, pay a visit to Mafia Mamma starring Toni Collette.
‘The Omen’ (2006)
Remakes are rarely better than the original, so it’s a bit surprising to discover that the 2006 version of The Omen surpasses the 1976 classic. The story remains largely the same – a childless American couple, Robert and Katherine Thorn (Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles), secretly adopt an orphaned infant in Italy. As he ages, the child, named Damien (Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick), behaves strangely and everyone around him seems to die a horrible death. Katherine soon suspects Damien could be the Antichrist, but Robert isn’t so sure. Is Damien the Devil’s spawn? And if he is, how can they stop him?
This remake largely works because you care more about the couple at the center of it. Robert and Katherine want what most couples desire – a child to call their own. Their desperate need for one blinds them to what’s obvious to other people – that Damien is one mean SOB. The third act is one death after another, and director John Moore skillfully ratchets up the suspense until the shattering conclusion. I won’t spoil anything other than to say that where Damien ends up is appropriate in 2006 and 2025.
The Omen is streaming on Hulu.
‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle’ (2025)
The ‘90s were the golden era of thrillers, and one of the best is The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. It was only a matter of time before Hollywood remade it, but rest assured, this remake honors the spirit of the original while being its own thing as well.
Suburban mom Caitlyn (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) needs help. She just gave birth, and she already had her hands full with young Emma (Mileiah Vega). Enter Polly (Maika Monroe), a seemingly perfect nanny who solves every problem Caitlyn has. She also seems to be slowly taking over her family, including turning Emma against her and seducing her unsuspecting husband, Miguel (Raúl Castillo). Or is she? Caitlyn can’t be sure if Polly has evil intentions or if, as her husband suggests, it’s her postpartum depression that’s making her paranoid.
Of course, we all know what’s going down. Polly is up to no good, and it’s super fun watching Monroe and Winstead battle it out for control of the household. Like the original, the climax is a bit over the top, but who cares when it’s this entertaining?
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is streaming on Hulu.
‘Mafia Mamma’ (2023)
Middle-aged wife and mother Kristin (Toni Collette) is in a slump. Her son just left for college, her husband is cheating on her with a much younger woman and her beloved grandmother just died. Things take an unexpected turn when she attends the latter’s funeral in Italy and finds out she’s now the head of an Italian mafia family. Now a Don Corleone in high heels, Kristin finds she’s good at being a mafia mamma, even if she’s reluctant to actually kill people. She’ll have to find a way to retire without getting blood on her hands – or be sent to the slammer for life.
Mafia Mamma is a light-hearted, comedic take on The Godfather – but instead of tough guys in shadowy rooms, there’s just one intelligent woman who is more intimidating than Marlon Brando’s legendary Don. Colette’s known for her ultra serious work in Wayward, Hereditary and The Sixth Sense, so it’s a delight to see her chill out and flex her comic muscles. If her mamma ran the mafia, I’d join in a heartbeat.
Mafia Mamma is streaming on Hulu.
