The Wolverhampton Wanderers are in must-win mode.

Sitting at the foot of the Premier League table with one point from their first eight matches, Wolves needs to start putting some results together in order to fall further into the abyss and make things difficult in their fight for Premier League survival.

And while the oddsmakers aren’t giving Wolves much of a chance to pull the upset against Brighton this Saturday — Wolves are +420 underdogs at FanDuel at the time of writing — there are some reasons to believe that Gary O’Neil’s side can make this a scrappy encounter.

It has been a rough start to the season for Wolverhampton, but we do need to add some context to how things have gone for Wolves.

Most notably, they’ve played a brutally hard schedule to start the campaign.

Wolverhampton’s first eight matches have come against Arsenal, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Brentford, Liverpool and Manchester City.

That is the entire top four from last season, every team currently sitting in the top four currently and, if you include Brighton, means they’ll have played every team in the top-half of the Premier League this season save for Tottenham and Fulham.

It’s no wonder things have been rocky at the Molineux to start the 2024-25 campaign.

In fact, you could argue that we know very little about how good this Wolverhampton side is because it has played such a difficult schedule.

As for Brighton, it’s hard not to be impressed with its start to its campaign.

New manager Fabian Hurzeler has his squad in fifth place after eight matches with just one defeat to go along with four wins and three draws.

The Seagulls, too, have played a pretty difficult schedule, so this could be a team on the rise as things soften up.

Cracking Brighton at home will be a tough puzzle to solve for Wolves, but given how low the betting market is on them it is clear this is a buy-low opportunity against an opponent that still has some defensive flaws to figure out.
