What Mike Tomlin had to say after ending his Steelers tenure

News RoomBy News RoomJanuary 13, 20262 ViewsNo Comments

Mike Tomlin issued his first comments Tuesday after stepping down as head coach of the Steelers following a 19-season run.

“This organization has been a huge part of my life for many years, and it has been an absolute honor to lead this team,” Tomlin said after coming to the decision following “much thought and reflection.”

“I am deeply grateful to Art Rooney II and the late Ambassador Rooney for their trust and support. I am also thankful to the players who gave everything they had every day, and to the coaches and staff whose commitment and dedication made this journey so meaningful.”

Tomlin’s decision to move on from the Super Bowl-winning franchise came one day after Pittsburgh fell to Houston in the wild-card round with a 30-6 defeat at home.

It marked the Steelers’ seventh straight postseason loss. The team — which never had a losing record under Tomlin — last won a playoff game in 2017.

Tomlin concluded his run in Pittsburgh with a 193-114-2 regular-season record and a postseason mark of 8-12. He won a Super Bowl at the conclusion of the 2008 season.

“Coaching in Pittsburgh is unlike anywhere else, and I will always take great pride in having been a steward of this team,” he said.

“While this chapter comes to a close, my respect and love for the Pittsburgh Steelers will never change. I am excited for what the future holds for this organization, and I will forever be grateful for my time coaching in Pittsburgh.”

The Steelers are now the ninth team with a coaching vacancy.

The Steelers’ division rival Ravens joined the crowded lineup last week after firing longtime coach John Harbaugh after 18 seasons.

Harbaugh coached his final game for the Ravens on Jan. 4, a 26-24 loss to Pittsburgh that cost Baltimore the AFC North title and a postseason berth.

He has been linked to the openings with the Falcons and Giants.

Although coaching appears to be in Harbaugh’s future, it remains to be seen what Tomlin will choose to do next.

Should he pivot to television, The Athletic reported this week Fox is emerging as an early favorite.
