The first Master’s Tournament took place in March 1934.
Horton Smith won the inaugural event over runner-up Craig Wood and was awarded $1,500 for his efforts.
91 long years later, the 89th annual multi-day golf extravaganza — it isn’t the 91st because the tournament was cancelled from 1943-45 due to World War II — is going down at the Augusta National Golf Course starting on Thursday, April 10.
This time around, two-time winner Scottie Scheffler (who took home $3,600,000 after his victory last year) will be defending his second green jacket against 2024 runner-up Ludvig Åberg, 2023 winner Jon Rahm and perennial American stalwarts like Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa and Max Homa.
Another triumph would be a major achievement for the 28-year-old Scheffler; as of now, only Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods have ever won back-to-back Master’s.
“It’s just such a demanding golf course mentally and physically,” commentator Trevor Immelman explained to CBS Sports. “It’s on the knife’s edge on so many different shots where you have to be so extremely precise, particularly on approach, and have some things go your way…when you have that caliber of player there, it makes it even tougher.”
