There’s a basic delight, if you belong to that suffering tribe of Mets fans, in watching Juan Soto pull on his No. 22 jersey, tug on the brim of his blue-and-orange hat and smile for the cameras.
He’s one of the five best baseball players on the planet. He’s one of the five most entertaining baseball players on the planet. He was the subject of a bidding war involving Babe Ruth’s Yankees, Ted Williams’ Red Sox, Jackie Robinson’s Dodgers (and the Blue Jays, sure).
And now, against how we’ve been conditioned for generations, he’s a Met. Their No. 2 hitter and right fielder, for the next five years and probably the next 15.
But if you tuned in to the pageant of Soto’s official introduction Thursday at Citi Field, they didn’t reveal a whole heck of a lot.
