It was 12 and a half years ago, and the Rangers were looking to add depth on the right side of the defense down the stretch of the truncated 2012-13 season.
A young man named Andrej Sustr was coming out of college as a 22-year-old, and the Blueshirts were all-in. They thought they had the 6-foot-7 righty.
But they did not.
Sustr, a native of Plzen, Czechia, who had played one year in the NAHL and one year in the USHL before spending two seasons at Nebraska-Omaha, instead signed with the Lightning, who apparently presented a greater opportunity for the young defenseman.
