‘90s fitness icon Susan Powter didn’t find lasting love with men, so now she seeks companionship with women.
“Now I’m a huge lesbian. Total lesbian, great love affairs, many girlfriends, big fun,” Powter, 67, said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly published on Wednesday, November 19. “Best fun ever!”
Powter, who is best known for her popular weight loss infomercial Stop the Insanity!, was previously married twice. The former fitness queen tied the knot with ex Nic Villarreal in 1982, but the two divorced in 1988 after his alleged affair. The exes share two sons, Kiel and Damien.. Powter later wed Lincoln Apeland in 1989 before splitting in 1995. In 1998, Powter adopted son Gabriel.
Nearly a decade after her second divorce, Powter publicly came out as a lesbian in 2004. While she is now living as the more authentic version of herself, a relationship isn’t what she is seeking.
“I don’t date anymore, because that’s annoying as crap,” Powter told EW on Wednesday, adding that she has “no interest in ever getting married again.”
Powter revealed her last relationship was “years ago” as she prefers to live in solitude, referring to herself as a “hermit.”
“I like very large groups. I don’t socialize, I don’t have friend groups,” she explained. “I don’t socialize with anyone. I see my children once in a while, they’re adult men.”
Powter is back in the limelight following the release of her new documentary, Stop the Insanity: Finding Susan Powter. In the doc, which was produced by Jamie Lee Curtis, Powter opened up about her struggles on welfare following the loss of her wellness empire.
Powter rose to fame by sharing her journey of being a mother who gained weight following a divorce, but went on to shed the pounds and subsequently created her fitness program. Following the success of the infomercial, Powter went on to write three best-selling books and have her own TV show. She claimed to have earned $200 million in profit during the height of her fame.
While Powter was on the road to success, her empire crumbled in 1995. Due to a series of allegedly bad business deals and lawsuits, Powter was forced to declare bankruptcy.
“People don’t know. I don’t see one penny, where’s it going?” Powter says in her documentary. “I never said, ‘Show me the damn bank balance.’ I should’ve.”
Now, Powter lives in Las Vegas. She has been working as an Uber Eats driver since 2016.
“There isn’t a job I haven’t done in the past 10 years,” she told the camera while out on a delivery. “I was thrilled to get a job with Uber Eats.”
Powter confessed that she doesn’t need a huge bank account. Instead, she covets the basic necessities.
“I want enough money so that I can afford the basic things and if I need,” Powter shared. “And I am going to get an RV. And I’m not going to travel with it, I’m going to live in trailer parks. And I’m going to jack up the internet and go online. That’s my dream.”
