Diplomacy, but make it fashion.
Some of the biggest names in politics, style and entertainment turned out Saturday for a lavish state dinner in Paris, held in honor of the historic allyship between the United States and France.
In attendance were President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, who wore a midnight blue, shoulder-baring gown with white satin fabric belted at the waist, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron, who dressed in a white sheath with mesh sleeves and a pointed-toe heel peeping from the skirt’s hemline.
“France is our first ally and that’s not insignificant,” President Biden said, per ABC News, during his toast at the dinner on the week that marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
Former American tennis superstar John McEnroe arrived at the Élysée Palace in a polished suit and tie alongside his wife, singer Patty Smyth, who sported a dark-colored frock covered in polkadots.
And they were in fashionable company — actress Salma Hayek, dressed in a glamorous floor-length gown with a billowing black skirt and sultry lace bodice, arrived with her husband, François-Henri Pinault, in tow. Pinault is the chairman and CEO of fashion giant Kering, which owns some of the largest brands in the fashion industry, such as Gucci, Saint Laurent and Balenciaga.
Multi-hyphenate Pharrell Williams, newly minted creative designer at Louis Vuitton, arrived at the event in a belt branded with the “LV” logo. True to his Westernized design DNA, it was paired with a white, wide-brimmed hat, bolo tie and a pair of dark denim.
The guest list also included former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and wife Carla Bruni, as well as Biden Administration press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who donned a butter yellow gown, and French actress Lea Seydoux, a vision in navy blue.
