After it was confirmed that Southern Charm served as inspiration for the Ratliff family on season 3 of The White Lotus, Cameran Eubanks is pointing out the onscreen similarities to her former costar Thomas Ravenel.
Eubanks, 41, took to Instagram Stories on Monday, February 24, to weigh in on the discourse about how Jason Isaacs’ White Lotus character sounded like Ravenel, 62.
“Many of yall are echoing what I thought as soon as I heard the dad speak,” she wrote. “‘Damn, he sounds like Thomas Ravenel!’ That dialect is NOT North Carolina. It’s old Charleston.”
Eubanks went on to clarify the difference, adding, “Lots of messages asking what the difference is between a Charleston accent and the Old Charleston accent. Well, there really is no such thing as current Charleston dialect because now more Northerners live here than Southerners 🤣BUT the old Charleston English is still clinging on to a few.”
The former reality star pointed out how Isaacs, 61, appeared to recreate Ravenel‘s accent for the show.
“Also, fun fact — Thomas was the ONLY original cast member who was born and bred in Charleson,” Eubanks added. “I am from the upstate of South Carolina and our dialect is a lot more twangy and less refined 😜.”
Eubanks concluded by explaining specific guidelines of a true Charleston accent, including “R-dropping” and adding an “intrusive ‘y’ into the ‘ar’ sound.”
The accent insight came after Sam Nivola, who plays the youngest member of the Ratliffs, confirmed to People on Sunday, February 23, that creator Mike White instructed them to watch Southern Charm to prepare for their respective roles.
“Mike told us to go watch Southern Charm. In fact, Jason Isaacs, who played our dad, kind of modeled his whole accent and character off of [that cast],” Nivola, 21, revealed while his onscreen sister Sarah Catherine Hook appeared surprised by the assignment, adding, “I’m from Alabama. I found out through you guys. I was like, ‘He didn’t tell me to watch Southern Charm!’ I’m feeling left out.’”
Southern Charm, which has aired on Bravo since 2014, chronicles the personal and professional lives of several socialites who reside in Charleston, South Carolina. The show currently stars Craig Conover, Taylor Ann Green, Austen Kroll, Madison LeCroy, Venita Aspen, Leva Bonaparte, Whitney Whitney Sudler-Smith and his mother, Patricia.
Meanwhile, this year’s iteration of The White Lotus introduced Us to a wide variety of guests checking into the luxury resort in Thailand. Before Nivola and Hook, 29, got to celebrate their hard work when the show premiered earlier this month, the duo had fun visiting toddler hippo Moo Deng at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand.
“Sam was so excited yesterday when he found out we were coming here,” Hook said in a video shared by Max on Monday. Nivola agreed with Hook, adding, “I was so stoked. I went to the gym just to look good for Moo.”
New episodes of The White Lotus air on HBO Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.
