Jodie Turner-Smith allegedly wrote an impassioned letter to her ex-husband Joshua Jackson explaining the importance of a Black mother in the life of a biracial child as they fight over their daughter Juno’s schooling and summer schedule, Us Weekly can exclusively report.
Turner-Smith accuses Jackson of refusing to comply with an agreement reached in May 2024, and that was signed by the court, which allowed her to pick Juno’s school for the 2025/2026 academic year.
In the alleged correspondence, Turner-Smith explained that she would be working overseas and wanted to bring Juno with her for a period of time.
“Hi Josh. Thank you for your message. I appreciate your recognition of how fluid the production timeline can be,” she wrote.“Your willingness to accommodate that fluidity truly makes a difference.”
She continued, “I’m also glad we agree that our shared goal is to provide Juno with as much stability, consistency and meaningful time with both of us as possible. I hear and appreciate your point that this is ultimately her time with each of us, and not the other way around. That framing feels important.”
Turner-Smith said she was “glad” Jackson was “amenable to Juno spending a couple of weeks with her in Europe.” She didn’t agree with his request that he be allowed custody during the timeframe.
“This arrangement allows Juno to enjoy a true sense of continuity and presence — something we both value. She’s excited about our travel plans, and I believe this stretch of time will allow her to feel deeply grounded and connected during a season that’s naturally more open and flexible,” Turner-Smith told Jackson.
She said that when she is working overseas, her mother will also be there to look after Juno.
Turner-Smith added, “I want to raise the subject of something that has been weighing heavily on me — and it’s grounded not just in instinct or emotion, but in widely established research. Before Juno was born, you and I spoke at length about what she would need to grow into a strong, self-assured young person.”
The email continued, “Central to those conversations was the importance of the maternal bond — and more specifically, the critical role that being close to her Black mother would play in shaping her identity and self-esteem.”
The actress said, “Research consistency shows that for biracial children, particularly with a Black mother, that connection is not peripheral — it is foundational. It plays a vital role in identity formation, emotional resilience, and long-term psychological well-being.”
“These aren’t’ abstract ideas. They’ve lived, daily realities that Juno is already beginning to experience. And the consistency of our time together — especially when school is out and there’s space for deeper connection — is one of the most effective ways to support her through them,” Turner-Smith told her ex.
“That vision we once shared hasn’t changed. And it begins here — in ensuring that Juno is not only protected, but affirmed, reflected and deeply rooted in who she Is,” she added.
She ended the letter, “Warmly, Jodie.”
A source tells Us, “Jodie’s priority is, and has always been, Juno’s well-being — not conflict, not press, and certainly not performative parenting. This is about following agreed terms, and ensuring a shared commitment to co-parenting that centers the child.”
As Us first reported, Jackson wrote an emotional email in response to Turner-Smith telling her he did not agree with her custody proposal.
“I don’t think it’s good for Juno to go for as long as you have proposed without seeing either parent, whenever it is reasonably possible for us to avoid without putting undue stress on Juno,” he responded.
He added, “I think that maximizing that frequent, continuing and meaningful contact should be our guiding light through all of these conversations and planning of parenting time. Juno needs both of us. Ideally exactly equally.”
Jackson also objected to Turner-Smith’s request to take Juno to Morocco.
“I do not agree for Juno to travel with you to Morocco,” he wrote.“I will need much more information, dates, places, hotels, security, your work schedule, etc and a meaningful discussion with you prior to considering any specific travel to Morocco or anywhere else for that matter.”
In regard to Turner-Smith’s comments about biracial children and the importance of the relationship with their mother, Jackson said he had educated himself on the matter and was open to continue learning.
“I have read some articles about this, but I am always willing to educate myself further if you can send me some links or citations. I am already in agreement that the mother/daughter relationship is of huge importance,” he wrote. “I recognize that there are areas of Juno’s experience that I cannot touch or speak to from my own experience.”
The entertainer added, “I hope you agree that the father/daughter relationship is also of huge importance.”
As Us previously reported, Jackson filed for divorce from Turner-Smith in October 2023. The exes settled their divorce earlier this year, agreeing to share joint custody of Juno.
The Dawson’s Creek star agreed to pay $2,787 per month in child support, which would be adjusted every year based on their respective incomes.
Turner-Smith will not be paid spousal support but will receive two payments of $133,333.
The actress has yet to respond to Jackson’s latest motion in court.
