Terrell Williams is being moved into a high-ranking role with the Patriots, setting the stage for a vacant position at defensive coordinator that could be filled by inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr.

The changes to Mike Vrabel’s coaching staff in New England have been reported by multiple outlets and help the Patriots head coach keep two valued staffers within the organization.

Kuhr handled the defensive coordinator duties after Williams was diagnosed with prostate cancer early in the season, and he handled things exceptionally well in a season where the defense played a key role in New England’s run to the Super Bowl.

Both Williams and Kuhr had been with Vrabel since his days in Tennessee.

Williams has been a trusted voice for Vrabel and, according to The Athletic, that was someone whom the head coach didn’t want to lose.

It’s unknown where exactly his role will place him, whether that be in the front office or as an aid to coaches.

Williams had been with the team at training camp and the first week of the regular season, and was diagnosed with cancer.

He has been declared cancer-free and was around the team during their playoff run, with Vrabel shouting him out during the week of the Super Bowl.

“Great to have him out here this week,” the Patriots head coach said. “And I would say that he has a reach to all three phases, the players on our team and through our staff. So, I’m glad that he can be out here to enjoy this and also help us prepare.”

Vrabel had also praised the work that Kuhr had done this season, describing him as “fantastic.”

The Patriots fell to the Seahawks in the Super Bowl last Sunday, 29-13, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
