A member of the University of New Mexico’s marching band made waves on social media before the team’s second-round loss to Michigan State in the NCAA men’s tournament on Sunday.

Some March Madness fans were buzzing about a woman playing the flute when TNT cameras captured the band performing in the stands at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, where the Spartans advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 71-63 victory over the Lobos.

The woman, who styled her long gray hair with a pom pom, appeared to be much older than her fellow band members.

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy re-shared the clip on X and wrote, “5th year senior?”

Some posted similar messages and raised questions about the university’s Spirit Marching Band.

“There is a lady playing the flute in the New Mexico band that can’t be younger than 65 years old,” another wrote, adding, “How is this possible?”

The UNM band program features various bands that offer different levels of musical ability and interest. For instance, the Campus Band is open to faculty, staff and community members.

The Campus Band encourages the continuation of performing music without the pressure of auditioning, per the UNM website.

The woman could potentially be a staffer or a member of the community who is passionate about playing the flute.

The school has yet to respond to a request for comment.

On Sunday, the woman wore a red polo shirt with the band’s logo on it and a yellow flag draped around her like a cape.

Michigan State and Ole Miss will meet in the Sweet 16 on Friday at State Farm Arena.
