Jonquel Jones isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
The 2024 WNBA Finals MVP is finalizing a multiyear deal with the New York Liberty, multiple sources told The Post on Saturday.
Jones re-signing is the first major domino to fall on the Liberty’s free agency, though Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu have also shared their intentions to return to Brooklyn this season.
The news of Jones’ return was quickly followed by the Liberty picking up marquee free agent Satou Sabally.
New York also signed Spanish forward/center Raquel Carrera to a training camp contract, according to multiple sources.
It’s a one-year deal, worth the rookie minimum of $270,000.
Jones was putting together an MVP-caliber campaign before an injury sidelined her for a month last season. She finished averaging 13.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 31 games.
Meanwhile, Carrera, 24, is widely considered one of Europe’s top young talents after she made her international debut when she was only 14 years old.
She’s been playing professionally for a decade now and has suited up for Valencia Basket, currently the WNBA offseason home of Leonie Fiebich, since 2020.
The Atlanta Dream drafted Carrera No. 15 overall in 2021, making her the highest-drafted Spanish player ever in the WNBA draft. The Liberty acquired Carrera’s draft rights in June 2022.
Carrera adds size, rebounding and additional interior scoring to the Liberty’s frontcourt, which was weakened by injuries last season. She plays more as a power forward but can also play center. Her arrival comes on the heels of Nyara Sabally’s departure in the expansion draft.
It’ll be interesting to see how Carrera adapts to the league’s pace and physicality.
The Liberty’s free agency is far from over; Ionescu and Stewart still need to officially re-sign. The Liberty also intend to re-sign Marine Johannes and have extended a reserved qualifying offer to Rebekah Gardner.
Training camp opens April 19, and the season starts May 8.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
