Of all the words and sentences and thoughtful dialogue George Young contributed to the world of the Giants during his Hall of Fame tenure, this one mantra of his spoke volumes:

“Owners own, managers manage, coaches coach and scouts scout.’’

It was Young’s way of making it clear that everyone has a distinct job to do.

Young in many ways was a scout at heart, before he was named general manager. His successor, Ernie Accorsi, was a sportswriter and NFL public relations executive with the sensibilities of a scout. Next came Jerry Reese, a true scouts’ scout. Then there was Dave Gettleman, a career scout who worked his way up. At present, the Giants’ football operation is run by Joe Schoen, a low-level NFL scout right out of college who rose through the ranks to get where he is today.
