The Jets can’t fly clear of the turbulence.
As the team trudges through another difficult losing season, New York Jets fans caught some random fire from “Jeopardy!” Thursday night — just hours after a report alleged that owner Woody Johnson makes crucial team decisions based on player ratings from video-game franchise “Madden NFL.”
Fans of Gang Green were left stunned when host Ken Jennings revealed the answer to the Final “Jeopardy!” clue in the category of “Super Bowl History” was based on the Jets lack of postseason success for decades.
The clue, Jennings read, was: “It’s the only team to play in the Super Bowl before Neil Armstrong’s moon walk that has not been back to the Big Game since.”
While all three contestants may need to brush up on their football history, answering the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, and Houston Texans — Jennings revealed the correct answer was the New York Jets.
“The winners of Super Bowl 3, the Jets, are having a pretty rough 55-year streak,” Jennings said.
Contestant Laura Faddah ultimately emerged victorious as champion, wagering only $2,400 of her $13,600 on the final question.
However, many fans of the Big Apple franchise tuning in to America’s most popular quiz show also felt like losers.
“Even jeopardy is sh–ting on the jets today. I am in hell,” one depleted fan wrote on X.
“Jets fans can’t even watch jeopardy in peace these days,” said one user.
“No one on Jeopardy knowing that the Jets were in a Super Bowl might be the lowest moment of their franchise. Even lower than being in a Final Jeopardy question that’s kinda sh–ting on them,” another pointed out.
“Damn Final @Jeopardy why you gotta be so hurtful to us Jets fans? We suffer enough!” One Gang Green fan asked.
The last time the Jets were in a Super Bowl was in 1969, when quarterback Joe Namath, now 81, led the team to a 16-7 win over the Baltimore Colts (now the Indianapolis Colts).
Aside from Armstrong walking on the moon, Gang Green last won a Lombardi Trophy when Richard Nixon was President-elect, over 500,000 US troops were fighting in the Vietnam War, Led Zepplin was about to drop their first album, “The Brady Bunch” was filming its first season, and the Woodstock music festival was still months away from happening.
The blow on “Jeopardy!” was the icing on the cake for a miserable day and overall season for the franchise.
Earlier Thursday, Jets fans learned that owner Woody Johnson nixed a potential trade for former Broncos star and current Browns wide receiver Jerry Jeudy because his “Madden NFL” rating was too low — as relayed by former Jets general manager Joe Douglas to Denver, according to The Athletic.
The decision was reportedly influenced by his teenage sons, Brick, an 18-year-old Harvard freshman, and younger brood Jack.
Jeudy has been one of the NFL’s best receivers this year despite inconsistent quarterback play in Cleveland, totaling 70 catches for 1,052 yards and four touchdowns.
The Jets, who enter Week 16 with a 4-10 record, are out of playoff contention.
This year will mark the 14th consecutive season that the team will miss the playoffs and the 19th time in Johnson’s 25 years of ownership.
